Ask Some Important Questions Before Deciding on a Career College
November '08Always ask questions to help keep you on the right path during your search for a college career. It is possible that you've come across some occupational detours -- coursework that is not necessary, employment opportunities that are limited, and searching extensively on the Internet hoping to find the right profession. With a career college, however, you can quickly move down the road to a profitable career in a respected profession. As one student recently said of the training she received, “[it was] exactly what employers are looking for. I did not use my time unwisely by taking classes that I really didn't need for the job market."
If you are considering earning a certificate from a career college that will train you for a certain healthcare support position, jobs like medical assistant, pharmacy technician, or health claims examiner/medical biller, or other challenging positions -- it is essential that you ask questions prior to enrolling. You will want to be secure with your decision prior to beginning your studies.
Following are some of the criteria educational experts think will help as you review the pros and cons when searching for a career college:
INTERESTS AND GOALS: Make sure your goals are set, and that you understand the career and the training you need to get there. If you have an interest in a career that provides medical support to physicians, you would want to look for a career college that concentrates in that type of education. Make sure the college has an outstanding reputation.
Will the education you receive be the right training for the job you’re seeking? For example, if you want to become a pharmacy technician, you would want to gain knowledge and skills in dosage calculations, drug distribution systems, product recognition, to name just a few knowledge areas.
CHOOSING A SCHOOL: Make sure the school you choose is accredited and that you will receive a certificate upon completion. A school is only accredited if its policies and programs meet the criteria that have been set by an independent oversight agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, a trade association or other type of professional group that specializes in the medical industry. This ensures a quality education and high career potential, and gives you credibility in your field of choice.
Is the school's location easy to get to? Search for a career college that has campuses in several locations and is easily reached by public transportation as well as freeways. Make sure you’ll be able to find parking.
Does the school have up-to-date classrooms and state-of-the-art medical equipment? If so, this means you will have the knowledge and skills needed in today’s advanced medical facilities.
What are the admissions requirements? Applicants will need to complete an application form and have a personal interview with an admissions representative. Do you need your GED? There are a number of schools that will help you take the high-school equivalency test assuming you have been approved for testing by the school administration. In case you do not have your high school diploma or GED, there are some programs that require you to pass a nationally recognized ability-to-benefit test.
FINANCIAL AID: Where will your funds come from for your training? Career colleges are affordable; often financial aid is available to those who qualify. If you do qualify, the school’s financial aid office will assist you with the application process. There will be a number of choices to help with your tuition payment. For anyone who needs help financially, there are also grants and low-interest loans.
OTHER SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Does the school offer career development or employment assistance? It would be prudent to find a school that provides a career services department for job placement assistance after you graduate. Assistance can include interviewing techniques, resume preparation, leads for jobs, networking workshops and time management planning.
